Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship Round 1

BALLYHEA 0-10 NEWCESTOWN 1-6 (07/05/05)
Played At | Ballyanly.

We advanced to the 3rd round of the Championship last Satyrday Night with a hard earned 1 point victory over West Cork side Newcestown at Ballyanly. This was a very hard fought game but Ballyhea exacted revenge for last years 1st round defeat to the same opposition. We received a boost with the return of Neil Ronan and Stephen Dennehy.

Maurice O' Sullivan pointed after 30 seconds but with the aid of the strong wind the West Cork lads had 3 points to lead 0-3 to 0-1 after 10 mins, Olly Morrissey bringing off a fine save from a penalty helped to keep the defecit to 2 points. At half time we trailed 0-4 to 0-3, Darran Ronan pointing in the 28th and 29th mins.

In the second half Ballyhea, now with the aid of the wind, had some fine points from Neil and Darran Ronan and Maurice O' Sullivan to go 0-10 to 0-4 ahead with 3 minutes remaining. Ballyhea were having some powerfull performances from Eamon Morrissey, Ian Ronan, Championship debutant Michael Morrissey and a number of fine saves from Olly Morrissey. Newcestown added 1-2 in the final minutes but Ballyhea held on for a 1 point victory, our first championship victory at intermediate level since 1980, and a place in the third round.
