Cork County Club Senior Hurling Championship 2003 Round 3

After a very disappointing performance our seniors went crashing out of this year's Championship at a very well prepared Charleville pitch last Saturday night. Ballyhea needed a good start in this game but it was Newtown who started well with 1-5 in the opening 10 minutes before Neil Ronan had Ballyhea's first score with a pointed free. Newtown continued to dominate and would have been further ahead only for erratic shooting and two fine saves from Olly Morrissey. Ballyhea still only trailed by six points at the half time break on a scoreline of 1-8 to 1-2. Neil Ronan goaled from a 21 yard free after Maurice O'Sullivan was fouled after a defence splitting run. When Neil Ronan pointed a free early in the second half it looked like a revival was on the way but this was short-lived when defensive errors left Newtown in for two goals in a minute and this finished the game as a contest.

Ballyhea had further points from Neil Ronan (2) and Diarmuid O'Riordan but Newtown added a 4th goal with 10 minutes to go and at this stage they were well on their way to the quarter finals. To add to Ballyhea's woe, Sean Curtin carrying an injury, had to leave the field after just 10 minutes.

In what was a very disappointing night for Ballyhea, Newtown proved much sharper and best of luck to them in their quest for a second county senior title. Before the game a minute's silence was held in memory of Mrs. Josie Curtin (grandmother of Ian and Sean) who died early on Saturday morning.
