This well attended derby saw victory go to the home side after a tough contest on Sunday morning last. Scores were hard to come by in the opening 15 minutes with Newtown scoring 3 points before Neil Ronan opened Ballyhea's scoring in the 13 minute. Ballyhea had a number of wides in this period that were proven to be very costly as Newtown stretched their lead to 5 points 0-7 to 0-2, Darren Ronan scoring Ballyhea's point. Maurice O' Sullivan had a pointed free before Neil Ronan fired an unstoppable shot to the net to leave a point between the sides. But Newtown replied immediately with a point from Gerry O' Connor and then on the stroke of half-time a goal from Dan O' Riordan to leave the deficit of 5 points at the half-time break.Ballyhea lost the services of team captain Eamon Morrissey just before the short whistle with a head injury.
Another Maurice O' Sullivan free had the lead back to 4 points in the first minute of the second half. Newtown had 5 unanswered points in the next 15 mins to lead 1-13 to 1-4 although keeper Paul Morrissey did well on two occasions to deny Jonathon O' Sullivan and Timmy Shanahan certain goals. Sean Curtin pointed from long range and Ballyhea were denied another goal when a Newtown defender cleared off the line as Timmy Shanahan's effort seemed destined for the net. Neil Ronan pointed a free and followed with another blistering free to goal in the 58th minute. Aidan o' Connor reduced the lead to 4points but this proved to be the last score of the game
