One of Ballyhea's legendary hurlers and club Vice President Tim Griffin passed to his eternal reward last Thursday . He was born at Gurrane Cross Ballyhea in August 1925.  Tim went to school in Ballyhea and learned his hurling in the fields  of Gurrane . Tim played in the club's first ever minor team in 1941 against Newtown in Newtown . He made his junior debut in 1942 beating Charleville in the first round of the championship also in Newtown . In 1944 under the new Parish rule ,Tim lined out with Charleville as he was now living and working there . A year later he won a North Cork junior hurling medal with Charleville . Tim won county intermediate medals with Charleville in 1946 and 1947 before returning to Ballyhea in 1949 and won another North Cork junior hurling medal defeating Doneraile in the final . Ballyhea made it two in a row in 1950 with Tim again at midfield . This side reached the county final only to lose out to Glen Rovers. Three years later Ballyhea won the North Cork  junior hurling title again in 1953 with Tim now tormenting defences at full forward . Ballyhea lost the divisional  final in 1954 but in 1955 the North Cork title was regained and this side went on to win the county title captained by Tim . The picture of this team can be seen in many a household in the parish with Tim in his distinctive striped jersey proudly holding the county cup .After 2 years at intermediate Ballyhea returned to junior in 1958 and won the Avondhu title , Tim again at full forward . He won his sixth North Cork junior hurling medal in 1959 defeating Castletownroche , with the side going on to reach another county final but lost out to Cobh at the Athletic Grounds . When Tim retired he turned to coaching and led Churchtown to the North Cork  junior b title in 1969. He also trained Ballyhea and Charleville juniors hurlers in the early seventies . Tim was also an accomplished referee renowned for his strict application of the rules . He also received the Ballyhea Gaa hall of fame award a few years ago as recognition for his service to the club and was elected Vice President of the club .Tim was a gentleman and loved the chat about hurling , he will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him .
